Sleep

Getting a Good nights sleep is very important to our health, much more so than we realize.  Many psychiatric disorders, such as Major Depressive Disorder or General Anxiety can impair sleep.  Conversely, poor sleep may be a trigger a psychiatric disorder.  Sleep is a necessity; it serves multiple purposes.  It is theorized that the brain gets a chance to organize data from the day's activities, and without sleep, this data will be lost.  Many sleep experts believe that the cardiovascular system becomes over taxed without sleep.


​However, most of us in the 21st Century do not get enough sleep.  We may think that we do, but we are actually not functioning at our best when we get less than 8 hours of sleep.  Sleep scientist, Michael Walker, gave the analogy of the person at a bar after a few beers.  This person may feel, from their own subjective observation, that s/he is well enough to drive, but we know from research that a few drinks slows motor activity and impairs judgment.  This person might not be falling down drunk, but if they encounter an emergency situation while driving home, they will not have the resources to respond.  99% of the time, there are no close calls, so from experience of driving home with a few beers in their system, they conclude that they will do just fine driving home.  It is the same with sleep.  We don't know that we are operating less efficiently, because we are so accustomed to getting by on 5-6 hours of sleep.
