Small Decisions Matter: Discernment for Everyday Life

By DeVine Interventions | August 5, 2020

Life is in the details. Listen to C. S. Lewis describe how our small, day-to-day decisions matter.
Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of.

Where Did This Anxiety Come From?

By DeVine Interventions | July 29, 2020

Spirits of anxiety come from hell. Their target is your Achilles heel, the chink in your armor. They aim to get a hook in your flesh to dissipate your strength and corner you in continual warfare. The devil doesn’t need you to be anxious about the new Corona Virus or its financial impact, although that was the world-wide invitation. The anxiety released on the remnant is a more calculated assault to destroy you based upon insecurity that has gone unchecked until now. That insecurity could be your health, finances, children, future, trauma, or vulnerability left open in your past. The devil is sifting the saints, but so is God!

The Mercy of God: No Start Date, No End Date

By DeVine Interventions | July 22, 2020

Human beings are very committed to marking the beginning of events. The New Year always kicks off on January 1. The same holds true for the seasons, with each having their own start date.

Restoration, Moving Forward Instead of Going Back

By DeVine Interventions | July 15, 2020

Restoration. It can be a beautiful thing. A concept that comes up in scripture many times, but it often makes us think of restoring what has been lost. Going back to the way to things were. How many times do we think to ourselves or even say out loud, “If only I could go back to the way things were when…, then everything would be ok.” Or “I just wish things were how they used to be.”

Overcome Evil With Good

By DeVine Interventions | July 8, 2020

When we are teaching our counselees what to do about the problem of evil being done against them, we should help them see that if they return the evil that has been done against them by sinning against another person, they will continue this horrible cycle. It is only when they choose to show love that evil will stop its horrible spread.

Wait For It: Seeking God in Troubling Times

By DeVine Interventions | July 2, 2020

In Habakkuk, an obscure little book with an obscure sounding name, the prophet by the same name grapples with some difficult questions. In the beginning of the book the cry of his heart is for justice as he reflects on all of the world’s injustices; even those found in the recesses of his own heart.

Look to Jesus When Facing Trauma

By DeVine Interventions | June 24, 2020

Trauma destroys in such profound ways that the notion that Jesus can help sometimes feels empty. It is important to be specific about what Jesus does. Jesus can help us face trauma by offering three key elements: compassion, comfort, and solidarity.

Jesus Offers Compassion

Defeating Despair

By DeVine Interventions | June 17, 2020

We’ve been cooped up now for several weeks and many of you haven’t had any real significant social contact in all that time. Some of you are not only cooped up, but laid off. Perhaps you have applied for unemployment benefits because your company has essentially shut down. Others of you own businesses and you’re beginning to wonder if you’ll even survive the economic downturn caused by the restrictions in place because of this pandemic. Many wonder if they’ll catch the dreaded virus and die.

Does Life Feel out of Control?

By DeVine Interventions | June 10, 2020

400 years. That’s how long the Israelites waited for God to deliver them from slavery. But after they left Egypt, God didn’t take them directly to their promised land.
Instead, they camped out at the base of a mountain while God instructed Moses. During that time, God’s glory rested on the mountain.
But after 40 days, the Israelites grew frustrated by the delay…so they rejected God and pursued whatever pleased them.

Brokenness

By DeVine Interventions | June 3, 2020

Brokenness. It is an experience we have all had to some degree: loss of a job, a dream, a relationship. It could be death, destruction, disease, or disappointment. Perhaps you see yourself as broken and, as a result, rejection, injury, betrayal, disability, shame, or failure threaten to define you. To some degree or another, you and I have experienced brokenness. And the threat of being swallowed by the brokenness of our circumstances is ever-present.
