Anger Management Using the STOP Method
Dr. Nay uses the STOP method, stands for Stop, Think, Objectify and Plan. This method is helpful for the Christian, and can be reframed in the following manner:
- STOP: Identify that you are angry and Stop!
- THINK: Identify irrational thoughts that drive your anger and the false beliefs that underlie those thoughts.
- OBJECTIFY: Label your unhealthy thoughts and beliefs as lies of the devil. Replace the irrational beliefs with biblical beliefs. Memorize Scriptures that you can utilize in the moment of anger arousal.
- PRAY: Learn about effective communication skills, list your irrational beliefs, list your Scripture verses, learn communication pitfalls, learn negotiation skills, etc. and put it all into a plan. Pray over your plan 2x/day, at least once with a prayer partner.
Course Details
and meets weekly for 12 weeks from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
Certificates of Completion are not guaranteed; but easily obtained by attending all classes and completing the entire workbook. Anger Management classes begin with an individual intake of 1.5 hours, which should be completed by the first week. Prior to the intake, each participant learns about treatment at DeVine Interventions Group, and signifies that they have read and understood policies with a signature. The participant completes a prescreen form. During the intake, the therapist evaluates the participant for mental health concerns and assesses strengths and needs. The participant completes a treatment plan during her/his intake. At this point, it may be determined that the client needs additional treatment or a higher level of care.
Any missed classes can be replaced with an individual session at the participant's expense. The participant must complete all assignments and all 12 classes. If a participant has a learning disorder or other special needs, this must be discussed prior to treatment so that arrangements (if possible) can be made.
