Addictions & Other Problem Behaviors

Change Is a Journey, Having a Destination Is the First Step

When you think of changing behavior, consider the SEMI truck.  It is on a journey cross-country, traveling slow and steady with a heavy load.  In the same way, change is a journey.  The environment is always changing.  It isn't just one thing being hauled, but a whole lot of things.  You aren't changing just one thing, but a whole lot.  It takes time, commitment and steadfastness.  You have a destination, with bumps in the road and detours, but you are committed to the destination.

DeVine Interventions Group uses Spirituality, Environment and Motivational Interviewing (SEMI) as its model of behavior change.  The science of behavior change has made great strides in the past 20 years. Through decades of research, we have gained a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which people make positive change.  The key to that understanding has been the discovery of inhibitors to the change process and methods of overcoming them.

"It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery." (Gal 5:1)

In Christ, we are equipped to live holy lives.  Therefore, do not acquiesce to sin.
Change requires prayer, faith, Holy Spirit, and truth.  We will incorporate all with which you feel comfortable including in your treatment, but we cannot help you change your behavior if you are completely opposed to this facet of treatment, because our method of treatment involves identifying values, identifying discrepancies, restructuring thinking errors, incorporating Scripture and prayer, and building faith.  If this aspect of treatment scares you, we will progress in this department at a slower pace.  If you are completely opposed, we probably aren't the right choice for you.

Our environment has greatly influenced us to become stuck in our current behaviors.  Your environment also maintains your current behaviors.  To change your behavior, you must change your environment.  The primary facet of your environment is people.  The people around you must change with you or you must change the people with whom you surround yourself (or both).

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is recognized by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) as the most effective means of helping people change unwanted behavior.  Motivational Interviewing (MI) is "a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence."  Improving your behavior is necessary for your physical, mental and spiritual health.  Motivational Interviewing is  both client and counselor driven treatment that recognizes the stages of change and leverages this in treatment.
MI draws on the motivations within the client.  The client is autonomous and responsible for their own behavior change.
